Local Teams Face-Off in Nationally Recognized BBQ Cook-Off at This Year’s High Desert Music Festival & BBQ Showdown!
Pete’s Piggy Barn, Rodeo Ray’s BBQ, C & C BBQ and Pork my Chick are among the local BBQ smokers that will face defending champions Wild Willy’s Smokin’ Hot BBQ at the High Desert Music Festival and BBQ Showdown, June 28 & 29 at High Desert Events Center (Formerly SBC Fairgrounds). High Desert Teams and BBQ teams throughout California, Arizona and Nevada vie for over $10,000 in cash, prizes and bragging rights. Teams serve up their best chicken, ribs, pork and brisket, festival attendees will enjoy live music, a juried car and bike show, games and prizes while they sample award winning barbeque and specialty foods.
Each BBQ team entrant brings a special element to the showdown. Adelanto commissioner, Mark Ferretiz, was looking for an opportunity to return to competition. “I have been in a few competitions and I was looking to get back into competition BBQ. I was happy to see there was one in my back door neighborhood,” says Ferretiz. “It is as an opportunity for high desert smokers to meet the challenge.” Ray Wright of Apple Valley’s Rodeo Ray’s BBQ, are award winning veterans. Pete Johnson of Pete’s Piggy Barn started competing at the 2013 festival and for the father and son team Carlos Barrera III and Carlos IV of Victorville, the showdown will be their first competition.
The festival will feature some of the nation’s most recognizable BBQ teams. Coachella team, Big Poppa’s Smokers have enjoyed success and the notoriety of being featured on the popular television show Pitmasters. Corona team, Burnin’ and Lootin’ has been competing since 2012 and named 2012 Rookie team of the year by the California BBQ Association. Todd Carpenter of Nuevo appreciates the charitable aspects of the sport. His team, All About the Q Team understands that they will not always recoup their cost to compete. “It’s all about the charity,” he says, “We are here to help others.”
The High Desert Music Festival and BBQ Showdown is sanctioned by the prestigious Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) and the California Barbeque Association (CBBQA) and contestants acumulate points towards the CBBQA Team of the Year (ToY) award. Moreover, the contest grand champion receives an automatic invitation to the coveted American Royal Invitational BBQ contest. Those interested in becoming a certified BBQ Judge or Certified Table Captain will have the rare opportunity to enroll in one of two classes available in 2014. Individuals completing the course will be able to judge barbeque competitions throughout the world. The course, taught by seasoned KCBS Representative Gene Goycochea, includes on site barbeque tasting and KCBS Membership.
