The much anticipated Gus Franklin, Jr. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (S.T.E.M.) Academy School in Adelanto held a grand opening ceremony on August 21.
Hosted by Principal Mina Blazy, attendees included Adelanto Superintendent Edwin Gomez, Board President Elaine Gonzales and other board members, plus Franklin family members from as far away as Florida and New York.
Following music by the Willie Cockrell Orchestra, a standing-room only crowd jostled for seats during a touching ceremony.
The amazing and lasting influence of the school’s namesake was emphasized by speakers Pastor Dr. Frank Fahenstock of the Jess Ranch Community Church, daughter Nykelle Carmon, accompanied by grandson Gus Carmon, and Gus’s sister, sister-in-law, and cousin.
Presentations were given by kindergarten and 6th grade students, plus a former school bus driver (now a teacher), and then a slide show of Gus’s life.
A commemorative plaque was unveiled by Gus’s widow LaChelle Franklin, a retired ASUD teacher herself. Attendees shared stories and memories during a reception.
