Division of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department were on hand to give advice and answer questions. Some of the scams they discussed were:

The lottery; you will not have to pay any money up front if you have won the lottery and you can’t win a lottery that you didn’t enter.

The Grandma scams; if a family member calls saying they are in trouble and need money, have a code word and don’t say a first name. Be sure to check with other family members to verify that the information is correct.

Secret shopper; although there are legitimate secret shoppers most of the ones advertised are scams.

IRS; the IRS will not call you demanding payment, they will send letters through the US mail and they don’t take payment on Green Dot cards.

In general don’t give out personal or financial information over the phone or on the internet unless you have initiated the contact.
