Helendale School District Corner

Welcome to the news section of what is happening with our local schools of Helendale Elementary, ICA and A.C.E. / Riverview School. There are many things going on with both schools.
Important Dates;
August 17th First Day of School
August 28th First Football Game of The Year VS Lone Pine at 7:00pm CSD Field
September 12th ACE Girl’s Volleyball Car Wash 9:00am to 2:00pm Silver Lakes Market.

After talking to the principals and superintendent, I have concluded that this year is about transitions and accountability. New teachers, new staff and more new electives, new subjects being offered, Google Chrome Books almost one to one, Friday Nights Football…this is the year to be part of Helendale School District.

RMS/ ACE is not only excited about their new football team but there is a new cheerleading squad getting everyone pumped. High school has their first AP class
(Calculus), offered and Food & Nutrition as an elective. There is also now a full time guidance counselor (Sarah Everett) on site. Mr. Brown, the new principal, was very excited to tell me about the return of the Pentathlon that Mr. Edison will help the students ready to compete in this academic competition.

Independence Charter Academy was featured on the front page of the High Desert newspaper “Desert News Post,” about its triple in student enrollment since opening 2014. Mr. Hayhurst has dedicated all his time and energy to making this a creative, safe and new approach to educating his students. ICA has a small student to teacher ratio and offers such classes in Criminal Justice, Computer Repair, Health and Wellness, and Band to name just a few.

Hollywood Nights

Jasmine Barnett, Bitsy Smith and Nina Hart with the help of so many presented their 2nd Annual Fashion Show. This year’s was all about Hollywood Nights Golden Era featuring models dressed up as a classic star. Shirley Temple, Grace Kelly, and Bettie Page, James Dean, Clark Gable were just a few that walked the runway.

The accommodating Helendale CSD opened their doors to host the decked out event with raffles donated by local businesses. Twisted Chicken was cooking out back giving 10% back towards the event.

After watching a very impressive gymnastics exhibition from our local Silver Lakes Flyers it amazes me how lucky we are to have our own fully equipped gymnastics studio. Bitsy has been running and teaching kids for eight years now and compete in Nationals for all ages.
To get the fashion show started Joelle sang her soul out with the National Anthem. The show was a success and made you feel like you took a step back in the classic time of Hollywood. The proceeds were shared with Silver Lakes Gymnastics and Breast Cancer Solutions.

Safety First

This was the first Helendale Safety Fair and was a beautiful day for being at North Beach. Just another event created for our little community. One could donate blood, learn about computer, pet, financial and home safety. Senior Outreach had a booth as well as Curves for fitness and Sheriff and Fire and CHP were also attending.

If you had any questions and concerns about security this was the place to get your answers. The only suggestion I would give is to advertise and maybe set next year’s date for after school starts.

Hot Rods, Pool & Food

What more do you need to have a successful Hot August Nights Pool Party at the clubhouse but classic cars, no host bar, pool, live music and good food. The Working Poets played while some people danced and others sat along the pool on a desert summer night and enjoyed a meal and a few cocktails.

The Silver Lakes Sunsetters parked their beauties in the parking lot for all ages to view. A bounce house kept the kids jumping until they were hot enough to swim and munch on nachos and hot dogs. This summer affair is always a popular one and Mother Nature was kind to us this year.
