Fifteen young high school seniors received college scholarships of a thousand dollars each during the Women’s Council of Realtors (WRC) Victor Valley, 4th Annual High Tea at the Hilton Garden Inn on August 12.
There were 47 applications submitted for scholarships, each including an essay on “Why I Need a Scholarship.” Fifteen winners were chosen by a panel who judged on the essay, the applicant’s background, community service and goals.
“When you’re sitting there reading an essay and shedding tears…this is one of the best things I’ve ever done,” said Jeannine Kingston, committee chair.
“You could tell, most of them were written from the heart,” said co-chair Sue Dearing.
Kingston felt that “Our realtors and affiliates of the real estate industry are supporting the community” with these scholarships.
The high tea’s theme of “Around the World in 80 Days,” was an occasion for wild costumes and imaginative table decorations.
Awards were given for best table themes, most creative, most elegant, most whimsical and best hats.
