The 31st annual Freedom Fund Breakfast was hosted by Victor Valley NAACP Branch 1082 on January 16, with the theme theme of “Pursuing Liberty in the Face of Injustice.”
Harold Hines acted as MC, a Posting of the Colors was done by GySgt Ronald Wilkins, Gloria Roberts sang the National Anthem, attendees sang the Black National Anthem, and distinguished guests and elected officials were acknowledged.
Musical selections by Hugo Sanchez and a Tribute to Victims of Injustice by LaVern Scriven were performed. Broderica Lathon, President of the Youth Council spoke, and Bill Thomas who recognized the generous sponsors.
Awards were presented to: Ammie Hines – Community Service, Ebony Purcell – Education, and Dr. Helena Johnson – President’s Award.
Peggy Moore introduced keynote speaker Lt. Col Marion Anthony Marshall, USAF Ret. who spoke about his military experience from 1968 until 1990, including being held as a POW in SE Asia from 1972-73.
